Guided by the principle that health is a universal right, the Simón Bolívar Foundation strives to facilitate access to resources, institutions, and the logistics to offer attention to patients, whose medical conditions force them to obtain treatments that lie far beyond their financial or geographical reach.
Established in 2006, the Simón Bolívar Foundation has transformed the reality of hundreds of people and their families by making available to them high-quality medical attention, which in many cases is the difference between life and death.
Our Foundation offers medical assistance programs, as well as grants to non-profit organizations.
The mission of the Simón Bolívar Foundation is to sow hope and harvest well-being of people most in need of medical assistance programs and grants to non-profit organizations related to the health sector.
For several years, CITGO Petroleum Corporation assisted in funding complex medical cases of Venezuelan patients referred by PDVSA Salud (PDVSA Health) through donor advised fund agreements with hospitals. As this cooperation grew, it became clear the need to create an institution completely focused on the administration, management, and coordination of requests for medical aid. In 2006, the Simón Bolívar Foundation was established as a non-profit organization funded by CITGO to assist people in need of medical treatment, due to lack of financial resources and non-existent treatments in their countries of residence.
Since then, the Foundation has helped numerous beneficiaries and has expanded its offering of medical assistance programs for liver transplants, bone marrow transplants, auditory implants, among others. additionally, the Foundation created a program to donate medical equipment and supplies to institutions that serve the medical needs of the communities in both Venezuela and the U.S.
Thanks to the personnel and financial support from CITGO, in alignment with the social responsibility principles of Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA), the Simón Bolívar Foundation makes the expansion of medical assistance a palpable reality.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, on July 24th, 1783, Simón Bolívar is one of the most prominent figures of the world political history.
Renamed by his followers and celebrated by history as the Liberator of America, Bolívar not only dismantled the yoke of the Spanish empire in the 19th century, in six nations, but also furnished a whole continent with an ideology of cohesion that has endured until the present day.
His ideals, reflected on thousands of writings, letters and speeches, constitute an immortal intellectual legacy, and his heroic actions that include 427 combats, 37 campaigns, the drafting of four constitutions, the foundation of a country and his visionary ambition to build a united America, have secured him a privileged place among the most illustrious and influential personalities in world history.
Only 20 years of intense political life were enough for the whole world to venerate him as a symbol of sovereignty and freedom, an emblem of the Latin American identity and the most irrefutable representation of the nationalist honor.
The Foundation takes the name of “The Liberator” because its mission and objectives are closely related to a message of emancipation, relief and rescue from poverty, illness and natural disaster, Simón Bolívar–a hero of the Americas– evokes and symbolizes.
